Bernadette Phan
Bernadette Phan (b. 1966) is a Vietnamese-Canadian visual artist whose practice encompasses painting, drawing, printmaking and weaving. Born in Cambodia to Vietnamese parents, she lived in France before her family settled in Quebec when she was three years old, later moving to Canada’s West Coast. Her experience across different languages, cultures and geographies has remained an important current within a practice concerned with memory, translation, embodiment and perception.
Phan studied Fine Arts at Concordia University in Montreal and received her MFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia. Her artistic development has also been shaped by her immersion in the Kwakwaka’wakw community of Alert Bay, British Columbia, and by longstanding ties to France. Over time, painting and drawing became central to her practice, joined more recently by weaving.
Phan has exhibited throughout Canada and internationally. Significant exhibitions include The Point Is at the Kelowna Art Gallery, Fantastic at Centre A in Vancouver, and exhibitions in Berlin and Vienna. Her work is held in the collections of the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at UBC, the Canada Council Art Bank, TD Bank and Global Affairs Canada.
