welcome to our

SATURDAY EVENING POST

April 26th, 2025

It was a true pleasure to welcome Barbara Astman to Vancouver for the opening of her exhibition at our gallery, presented as part of this year’s Capture Photography Festival. Traveling from Toronto with her husband Tony Baker, who grew up here in Vancouver, Barbara was met with a wonderful gathering of artists, curators, collectors, family, and old friends alike, who came together to celebrate not just her work, but the lasting relationships she has built over the decades. Among the crowd were students from the 1980s reconnecting with their former teacher, alongside peers who have exhibited with her across the years. The opening felt rich with shared histories, stories, and a deep sense of community.

The beautiful photographs you see here, capturing the spirit of our gallery and these special events, are always taken by the talented Kyle Juron. He is usually behind the scenes, slipping through the crowd with his camera, but this time we managed to catch him in action. It felt only fair to turn the lens back on the one who so often captures the magic in the rest of us.

Barbara is, above all, a generous storyteller, whether through her art or in conversation. She is a trailblazer in photo-based media, a mentor to many, and someone whose curiosity and insight continue to inspire across generations. This exhibition feels like more than just a presentation of her work, it is a reflection of the profound connections she has fostered in the Canadian art world and beyond. We are honoured to share this moment with her and grateful for the thoughtful conversations that filled the room.
