SATURDAY EVENING POST
December 9th, 2023
The current exhibition of David Spriggs' "Dimensionaliam" features a piece titled "Red Wave". This artwork pays homage to Spriggs' earlier work titled "First Wave", which was exhibited at the Oku-Noto Triennale in Suzu, Japan in 2020. The connection between these pieces adds depth and insight into Spriggs' creative process. "Red Wave" builds on themes of movement and energy, showcasing Spriggs' unique vision.
The Oku-Noto Triennale provides an extraordinary canvas for artists to create works that resonate with and rooted in the landscape and culture of Suzu, Japan.
“The Noto Peninsula juts out into the Sea of Japan from central Honshu, Suzu is positioned at its very top, surrounded by the sea on three sides. Suzu has a history as a ‘leading edge’ location once open to the Sea of Japan, and features rich culture.”
The triennale serves as a platform for both Japanese and international artists to showcase their contemporary art installations and projects against the stunning backdrop of the Noto Peninsula. One of the distinctive features of the Oku-Noto Triennale is its commitment to engaging with the local communities.
The Triennale is not limited to traditional gallery spaces; rather, it takes advantage of the diverse landscapes of the Noto Peninsula, including coastal areas, mountains, and rural villages. This allows artists to experiment with different forms and mediums, creating immersive and site-specific installations that resonate with the environment and its history.
David Spriggs finished production of the breath-taking “First Wave” amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and installed it in a former fishing net warehouse. Standing tall at 382 x 107 x 150 inches, the artwork not only commanded attention but aimed to stir a profound emotional chord. "First Wave" derives its allure from Spriggs' technique —meticulously layering acrylic-painted transparencies to portray the impending force of a tsunami. With 90 transparent sheets, Spriggs skilfully captured the intensity of an approaching wave, accentuated by the bold strokes of red. This colour, reminiscent of blood, heightened the emotional impact, eliciting visceral reactions from those immersed in the artwork.
"First Wave" became a temporal marker within the Triennale, reflecting the unique circumstances of its creation during the COVID-19 pandemic. The title, "First Wave," threaded references to the then ongoing pandemic while paying homage to the iconic Hokusai print, "The Great Wave off Kanagawa." In doing so, Spriggs' work becomes a conversation piece, inviting viewers to reflect on the interconnectedness of art, current events, and cultural heritage.
Don’t miss your opportunity to view “Red Wave” and other significant and poignant works in this current exhibition.
