Our Year in Review

welcome to our

SATURDAY EVENING POST

December 30th, 2023

As this year draws to a close, we also reach an important landmark: the first anniversary of our gallery's rebranding.

The emergence of Paul Kyle Gallery initiated a year characterized by diligence, commitment, and invaluable support from our community of family, friends, and clients.

The past twelve months have been marked by a series of visionary exhibitions, demonstrating our commitment to enriching the city's cultural landscape. Our programming has been dedicated to presenting significant works from both Canadian and international artists, focusing on works that merit particular attention and discussion. In curating our exhibitions, our aim has been to thoughtfully challenge preconceptions and to extend the boundaries of conventional artistic dialogue.

We believe in the importance of a discerning and courageous approach to art. We are always seeking to broaden our horizon and deepen our engagement with the changing narratives in art.

HERE IS OUR YEAR IN REVIEW

JOSEPH KYLE: THE SOUL OF AN ARTIST

The first major solo exhibition of this year, and marking the beginning of Paul Kyle Gallery, this exhibition of Joseph Kyle’s work created a pivotal moment in both the gallery's and Paul's journey. Opened in late February, which coincided with the centennial of Joseph Kyle's birth, the exhibition was his first major exhibition in two decades. It presented a comprehensive view of his artistic legacy, featuring key works from each series he created.

Complementing the exhibition, the launch of a book bearing the same title offered a deeper insight into Kyle's lifelong artistic dedication and his aspirations as an individual.

This exhibition was not just a deeply moving experience for many but also served as a crucial highlight in the history of Canadian art, particularly emphasizing the artistic evolution in Western Canada. The exhibition stood as a testament to the emotional resonance of Kyle's work and its significance in the broader narrative of Canadian artistic development.

JACK SHADBOLT: REVELATIONS

This exhibition spans Jack Shadbolt's prolific career, featuring never-before-offered monumental works. It highlights his unique blend of West Coast Indigenous Arts and an expressive style, deeply rooted in humanistic ideals.

The collection includes his early post-war works, characterized by powerful and bleak imagery, and evolves through phases of dark, expressive forest drawings, Indigenous art-inspired paintings, and dynamic semi-abstract canvases in his later years. Shadbolt's encounters with Emily Carr and experiences as an unofficial war artist, combined with influences from Surrealism and Cubism, profoundly shaped his artistic vision. His late works, embodying themes of rebirth and regeneration, reflect his lifelong quest to balance nature with abstraction.

A TRIBUTE TO ROBERT YOUNG

ROBERT MURRAY: BETWEEN EARTH AND SKY

The Robert Murray exhibition represented a landmark event in the Canadian art scene, particularly in its celebration of a nationally acclaimed artist. Murray, renowned as Canada's premier contemporary abstract sculptor, has played a pivotal role in shaping the landscape of Canadian art. His works, characterized by bold geometric forms and a profound connection to the land, have transformed the visual language of the country's artistic landscape. This exhibition, featuring a range of his works, provided a comprehensive look at his artistic journey and contributions.

Furthermore, the presence of Jonathan Lippincott, an authority on Robert Murray and large-scale sculpture, added a significant layer of insight to the exhibition. Lippincott's expertise in the field, particularly his understanding of the intersection between abstract sculpture and architectural space, enriched the audience's experience.

The exhibition was thus not only a celebration of Murray's artistic legacy but also an exploration of the dynamic relationship between art, space, and viewer experience, making it a crucial event for both art enthusiasts and the wider public.

RESHAPING SILENCE: MARZIEH A. FAKHR & MAHDIEH RAEISI

"Reshaping Silence" showcases the works of Iranian female artists Marzieh A. Fakhr and Mahdieh Raeisi. The exhibition reflects the resilience and transformation of Iranian art, blending traditional Iranian heritage with global influences. Marzieh A. Fakhr's "159 square meters for comfort" series presents intense paintings that explore human nature and the body, blending beauty, eroticism, and the grotesque. Mahdieh Raeisi's bell sculptures, inspired by the cultural significance of bells in Iran, pay homage to traditional Iranian rituals and symbolize respect and honor. Together, their works offer a celebration of Iran's dynamic legacy and evolving traditions.

Spriggs brings a unique and transformative approach to art, blending sculpture and painting to create immersive, multi-dimensional experiences.

His work, characterized by intricate layering of transparencies and a deep engagement with themes of power, movement, and perception, offers viewers an unparalleled opportunity to explore the boundaries between the tangible and the ethereal.

Showcasing Spriggs' work is crucial for the local art scene, bringing a globally recognized Canadian talent to the forefront and enriching the cultural dialogue within the city.
