Unveiling Duality: Exploring David Spriggs' "Paradox of Power"

welcome to our

SATURDAY EVENING POST

December 16th, 2023

David Spriggs' "The Paradox of Power," created in 2007, is a large-scale work that explores the themes of rapid change, deconstruction, and symbolic revolution. The artwork is notable for its distinctive technique of layering painted transparencies within a display case, creating a striking three-dimensional effect.

The installation features a life-size stratified bull, meticulously cut in two and displayed in two adjacent cases. This unique representation of the bull serves as an exploration of the symbol of power. Spriggs deconstructs the bull through layering of transparent strata, thereby fragmenting and reconstructing the mythologized power the bull represents in an alternate reality. The bull is depicted in a state of immobility, turned upside down with its legs in the air. Further adding to the complexity, the bull is rendered in plastic anaglyphic binary colours of red and blue, symbolizing the deconstructive possibilities of vision and an antithesis of power in the corporeality of the bull, which is contained, divided, and immobilized. The piece draws parallels with the Futurists in its representation of time and motion in sculptural form.

Spriggs' approach to this artwork, as with his other works, begins with seeking visually captivating and thought-provoking ideas. He delves into multiple meanings and interpretations of his subjects, drawing inspiration from a variety of sources including art history, philosophy, and science. These influences are evident in the deeper conceptual layers of "The Paradox of Power," which touches upon themes of power, perception, and form.

In "The Paradox of Power," Spriggs challenges the traditional limitations of two and three-dimensional materials. By painting cross-sections of the bull onto multiple layers of transparent film, he creates an environment that defies conventional artistic constraints. This technique broadens the ways in which concepts like deconstruction, symbolism, movement, and the immaterial can be contemplated. The artwork stands out not only for its technique and scale but also for its ability to engage viewers in a dialogue about the nature of power and perception.

Spriggs' description of the piece as a "deconstruction of time and form" aptly captures the essence of his vision. The artwork allows for an exploration of how the middle layers become more prominent, creating a boundary between the two colors that seem to explode from one another. This effect adds a dramatic visual impact to the piece, inviting viewers to engage with it in a multi-dimensional manner.
